A team of students led by researchers in the Nicholas School of the Environment will use satellite imagery and spatial data in Google Earth Engine (GEE) to determine how a quarter-million smallholder farmers across East Africa and India have successfully scaled tree planting as a natural climate solution over the past 25 years. Drawing on the world’s largest database of mapped tree-planting sites from The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program (TIST), students will develop interactive tools for visualizing the spread of tree planting across landscapes and identifying influential environmental and socioeconomic factors. These tools will be useful for TIST, other tree-planting organizations, and policy audiences. The project is sponsored by a partnership with The World Bank, in collaboration with TIST.
