Durham Public Schools

Data science for operations and planning at Durham Public Schools (2024)

2024

A team of students will collaborate with the Durham Public Schools (DPS) planning department to analyze,
map, and visualize student enrollment and demographic data in Durham County. This data will help
DPS plan and manage student enrollment and improve fairness in its student assignment policies.
The main project will be to measure school poverty using Durham County housing parcel data
(publicly available here). We will build off past work to aggregate the average home value and rate
of home ownership at different geographies, including DPS planning units, Census block groups and
tracts, school boundaries, and regions. The final result will be a visualization or interactive dashboard
similar to Wake County’s social equity atlas or the Durham Neighborhood Compass.
