Data science for operations and planning at Durham Public Schools (2026)

2026

A team of students will collaborate with the Durham Public Schools planning department to develop and refine capacity and student assignment optimization models. This project will be a continuation of work started by the 2025 Data+ team and will allow DPS to site new school capacity in line with future residential growth and create school boundaries that best optimize for distance, neighborhood cohesiveness, and diversity. In 2026, team members will add new optimization parameters to the models, add individual grade levels to the model, delve deeper into long-range enrollment forecasting, and create a visualization tool to share different capacity and student assignment scenarios. This work will help DPS plan and manage student enrollment and improve fairness in its student assignment policies.
