A team of students led by Civil & Environmental Engineering Professor Helen Hsu-Kim will develop a resource reserves database of coal ash wastes stored in hundreds of legacy disposal sites in the United States. The team will extract key information from historical datasets on coal energy production, incorporate geochemical information of coal ash wastes, and apply geospatial and statistical analysis tools in harmonizing the datasets. The team will use this resource reserves dataset to identify the regional market potential of coal ash for waste-to-resource material applications such as concrete and determine how such applications can aid in the decarbonization of the infrastructure materials and the built environment.
