Resourcing of Coal Ash Wastes for Decarbonized Infrastructure Materials

2023

A team of students led by Civil & Environmental Engineering Professor Helen Hsu-Kim developed a resource reserves database of coal ash wastes stored in hundreds of legacy disposal sites in the United States. The team extracted key information from historical datasets on coal energy production, incorporated geochemical information of coal ash wastes, and applied geospatial and statistical analysis tools in harmonizing the datasets. The team used this resource reserves dataset to identify the regional market potential of coal ash for waste-to-resource material applications such as concrete and determine how such applications can aid in the decarbonization of the infrastructure materials and the built environment.
