Durham County Detention Facility

Mental Health and the Justice System in Durham County (2024)

2024

This team, now in its 6th year, will examine a rich new dataset to glean insights about the programs and services offered during incarceration at the Durham County Detention Facility (DCDF). The team will clean and explore the new data set and combine it with existing data sets of bookings into DCDF and visits to Duke Health. The goals are to examine the effectiveness of current programs at DCDF, the healthcare costs incurred by this population, and trends in usage using statistical modeling in R. Our work will be shared with stakeholders in Durham County through regular meetings and reports.  Students who apply to this team are expected to commit to both the Data + Summer experience and the academic year Bass Connections experience.
