Data+/Code+/Computer Science Summer Research Poster Session: August 2, 2019, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Duke Energy Hub, 1st Floor, Gross Hall
The Data+, Code+, and Department of Computer Science undergraduate summer programs will draw to a close this Friday August 2, 2019 with a poster session featuring their discoveries. Combining three interrelated summer programs in STEM, this is the first year Code+ and Computer Science will join Data+ for a showcase of summer undergraduate research at Duke, featuring over 40 posters from all 3 programs!
Data+ is a 10-week summer research experience that welcomes undergraduates interested in exploring new data-driven approaches to interdisciplinary challenges. Students join small project teams, collaborating with other teams in a communal environment. They learn how to marshal, analyze, and visualize data, while gaining broad exposure to the modern world of data science. This year’s projects run the gamut from energy, health data, team dynamics, information technology, environmental data, public policy, finance, and using Natural Language Processing for humanistic enquiry.
Several of our Data+ teams gave an interview at week 7 and shared their thoughts on their projects so far. Check out our short videos below to see how these data science teams problem solve and adapt!

In collaboration with DTech Scholars and Data+, Code+ is now in its second year. Also held over 10 weeks in the summer, Code+ participants get hands-on experience with professional IT staff and work closely with Duke faculty from computer science, engineering and other domains. Projects provide technical skills development and project management experience. Code+ students are involved in all aspects of product definition, design, and development and learn the latest leading-edge innovative technology and tools in Mobile App Development, Machine Learning, Information Integration, Natural Language Processing, User Experience Design, and Front-end and back-end Web App Development. The Department of Computer Science has kicked off its first year of offering a summer program for undergraduates in Computer Science who would like to enhance their research skills by focusing on a project over the summer. Fifteen Computer Science undergraduates participated this summer on five different computer science projects ranging from privacy, machine learning, automated functions, and data analytics.
The Rhodes Information Initiative, the Department of Information Technology, and the Department of Computer Science, along with our partners, invite you to come to our poster session on Friday, August 2, 2019 from 2-4 p.m. in the Duke Energy Hub in Gross Hall to learn more about the extraordinary work these students have done over the summer!
